From the moment that a new recruit enters the police academy, he/she is taught to think like a cop.  If I had to only use two words to sum up what that thought process was, it would be, that they are taught to think Safety First.

The type of information and safety precautions that a recruit receives are relatively available to them from the moment they start the police academy and continues to be available to them throughout the duration of their career. 
 

Time has proven that on-duty as well as off-duty, these individuals are some of the safest people in the world.  Think about it.  If you were getting ready to walk into a convenient store that was being held up by armed robbers, would you prefer was walking up the pave way to the store with you.  An off-duty police officer or a off-duty taxi car driver.  No pun intended.

Of course, you would prefer to be walking up the pave way to the store with an office duty police officer.  You know that due to their expert training, he/she would be the best candidate to most likely to spot out the men with the guns or to notice something odd happening in the store. 

You know that due to their keen since of knowledge of armed robberies in progress, they would be the most willing and concerned people to slightly glance towards you and say "I'm an off duty police officer.  Do not look into to store, it is being robbed.  Just keep walking and look into your purse as if you are looking for the keys to your car.  Don't worry, I will make sure you and your little daughter get back to your car safely.

As a police officer, I've personally met many other police officers from all around the world -- and here's the startling observation I've made:  These individuals, including myself, are ordinary men and women who receive consistent, specialized, public safety training.  A large percentage of that training consist of learning to identify and eliminate the power of the predator:

Public Safety is a bridge that simply allows people to move safely from "Point A" to "Point B" without experiencing the dangers that lurks between both of those positions.  

There are four pillars of public safety.  I refer to them as the A-A-P-T Principle:.   

* Awareness - Knowing that a particular problem possibly exists.

* Assertiveness - Having confidence to take whatever actions are necessary to put themselves into a position of advantage.

* Plan & Action -  Having a plan and taking whatever actions are necessary to stay safe, prior, during and/or after a potential crisis arises.

* Team Work – A group of people who are committed to regularly inform them of particular threats that exist in their areas of patrol. Those same people are also committed to give police officers the best recommended safety tips to help them avoid becoming a victim of those threats.
